Victory for the Plus Sized

I know I’m a day late and a dollar short, but it literally just hit me how much of a victory it was that Ashley Nell Tipton won season 14 of Project Runway.

I’ve loved Project Runway since the show aired back in 2004. I’ve laughed and cried with the contestants for years and truly sympathized with them through all of their challenges. Well…all of them but the inevitable “real women” challenge. Then I cried for the models.

I’d like to say that I can’t imagine what it must feel like to hear someone say that they can’t design for your body. That your body was just impossible to make clothes for. That there was no way your body could be beautiful or sexy enough for their typical designs, but I can imagine. In one way or another, all of us in the plus size community are told this daily by the total lack of options in designs or the various fashion rules thrown at us.

Thank goodness for sites like Instagram or Pinterest that showed me all of the beautiful plus size ladies out there looking fierce as hell or I would have given up on fashion all together. Finding good stylish clothes for my curvy size 16 body is a battle, but I had found the will to fight it.

With Ashley’s win showcasing her passion, I feel renewed all over again. She showed us that you can conquer self-doubt and low self-esteem and show the world what you’re made of and it’s not in spite of your size! Ashley’s goal is to bring us to the fore front of fashion and show case chic style with an edge.

I, personally, cannot wait to see what the future holds for Ashley and the plus size fashion community. And to buy as many of her designs as I can, of course.
